Post-Holiday Mess in Schaumburg? Here’s the Fastest Way to Reset Your Home
A realistic reset plan for the first week of January.
The decorations are down, the guests have gone, and the house looks like it has been through something. It has. Here is a reset that takes one evening and a Saturday morning rather than a fortnight.
What the Holidays Actually Leave Behind
- Kitchen grease from weeks of heavy cooking with the windows shut
- Salt and grit tracked in by every visitor, concentrated at the front door
- Glitter, pine needles, and packaging fragments in carpet and upholstery
- Guest rooms and bathrooms needing a full reset
- Storage areas disrupted by decorations going in and out
- A refrigerator full of things nobody is going to eat
The Two-Session Reset
Session one — one weekday evening, about ninety minutes
The goal is not clean. The goal is reclaimed — getting the house back to a state where it functions.
- Everything decorative goes away first. Do not clean around it. Boxed, stored, done.
- Clear every horizontal surface. Cards, packaging, gifts without homes. One box for "decide later" is allowed — but put a date on it.
- Empty the refrigerator. All of it. Wipe the shelves while they are bare.
- All the bins out, all the recycling out. Everything.
The house is not clean at this point, but it is functional again, which changes how the rest feels.
Session two — Saturday morning, about three hours
- Kitchen first. Degrease the cabinet fronts above and beside the stove, the backsplash, the range hood filter, and the oven if the holidays were hard on it.
- Guest bathroom and guest room. Full reset, linens changed and washed.
- Entryway. Deep vacuum the carpet near the door in several directions, treat the hard floor for salt residue, wash both mats.
- Living areas. Vacuum upholstery including under cushions — this is where the needles, glitter, and crumbs are. Then dust top-down, then floors last.

The Order Matters
Two rules make this much faster: put things away before cleaning anything, and always work top to bottom with floors last. Clean the floors first and you will be cleaning them twice.
Starting the Year Properly
January is genuinely the best month of the year to reset a house. You are indoors most of the time, salt season is only halfway through, and the schedule for cleaning services is at its most open before spring demand arrives.
A lot of households do the two sessions above themselves and hand over the deep-reach work — a deep clean covering grout, vents, baseboards, window tracks, and behind appliances — in one visit. Then recurring service from January means there is no backlog waiting in April.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a post-holiday reset take?
Split as above, about four and a half hours of your time. Attempted as one push it takes longer, because you hit the point where you stop.
What should I do first?
Put things away. Never clean around decorations or unplaced gifts — you will only do it again.
Is January a good time to book a deep clean?
It is one of the best. Availability is much better than spring, and it is when you are actually living in the house.
What about the glitter?
Vacuum with the crevice tool along every upholstery seam and under every cushion, then again the following week. Glitter migrates. Everyone knows this and everyone is still surprised.
